Arsenal are on the brink of surrendering their Premiership title to Chelsea, with The Blues dominating the domestic scene this term.
In any other year, Arsenal would have been worthy winners of the Premiership title, but Jose Mourinho has built an exceptional squad at Stamford Bridge and The Gunners have been found wanting.
Gilberto missed most of the season due to a serious back injury and he has been sorely missed, as his return has coincided with Arsenal producing some of their best football of the season.
The Brazilian, though, feels investment needs to be made in the Highbury squad if they are to match Chelsea next term.
"We have to avoid the problems we've experienced and make sure injuries and bans don't hurt us next year," he said.
"It's vital we improve. I don't know what the club plans to do in the summer, but we need to bring more players in."
Arsenal can salvage something from the season if they beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final and Gilberto hopes the club can win in Cardiff to avoid a 'tragic' campaign.
"It hasn't worked out like we planned because we felt we would put in a stronger challenge for the title," added the Samba star. "We need to win the FA Cup to make sure this season isn't remembered as a tragedy."
