Arsenal have been outbid in the race to sign Sevilla striker Julio Baptista.Arsenal have been outbid in the race to sign Julio Baptista, after Sevilla rejected an improved offer for the Brazil international.
Sevilla have received four offers in total for the striker, with Arsenal and a second, unnamed, Premiership club - believed to be Tottenham - among the bidders.
Barcelona have also been in contact with Baptista's agent while reports in Russia have suggested Dinamo Moscow have entered the chase for the prolific forward.
Following Patrick Vieira's sale to Juventus, Arsenal have money to spend and there have been suggestions a new bid for Baptista will be tabled.
But while The Gunners mull over their own revised offer, Sevilla have dismissed a bid of é¼20 million (£13.5 million) for Baptista.
Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nido confirmed the bid had been rejected and also revealed Arsenal were not the club behind the highest offer for Baptista thus far.
"There is now a written offer on the table for Baptista for é¼20 million," said Del Nido.
"The offer is much higher than the three previous ones but is inferior to how much we want.
"We have not reached an agreement with Arsenal. We are in no hurry.
"The player is under contract and if we don't agree a deal then he will play at Sevilla next season."
Del Nido has previously suggested that Baptista will be sold this summer as the club would receive a smaller figure if they wait 12 months.
It now appears a sum of é¼25 million (£17 million) is likely to be required to tempt Sevilla into parting company with the 23-year-old.
