Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was happy to see Gareth Bale stay at Southampton.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he was happy to see Gareth Bale stay at Southampton during the transfer window.
The 17-year-old defender was widely tipped to move to the Premiership in January, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham all interested in signing the Welsh international.
However, the transfer deadline passed with Bale staying at St Mary's.
Wenger was pleased to hear that Bale moved nowhere as he admitted it gives his side a chance of signing the player in the future.
"Yes, that's right," smiled Wenger when asked if he was pleased that Bale had stayed. "The good thing is that we still have a chance. He's a special talent."
Meanwhile, Wenger has revealed Jeremie Aliadiere could have joined Middlesbrough during the transfer window.
Arsenal face Middlesbrough this weekend and Wenger concedes Aliadiere could have been coming up against The Gunners if things had worked out.
However, Wenger pulled the plug on the move after Robin van Persie suffered a broken foot last month
"It was an option (for Aliadiere to join Middlesbrough) we considered and he considered," added Wenger. "But the injury to Robin van Persie killed that possibility."
