Brazilian keen to extend Arsenal deal

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto is hoping to remain at Emirates Stadium for the remainder of his career. The Brazil international has been linked with a move away from The Gunners after slipping out of Arsene Wenger's first-team plans this season. An extended pre-season break in the wake of the Copa America saw Mathieu Flamini take over the midfield holding role alongside talented Spaniard Cesc Fabregas. Despite admitting his frustration at being out of the side, Gilberto is hoping to extend his current contract, which still has 18 months to run.

Condition

He said: "It is not just down to me, but it would be great if I extend my contract with the club and finish my career here. We will see if the club has the same feeling. "I am not thinking about leaving the club now. "I prefer to think that I have the condition to get back in the team. I will do my job, do my best to achieve that. This is what I have in mind." The Brazilian was quick to deny he had fallen out with Wenger, with Gilberto often asked to fill in at centre-half when needed, rather than his favoured central midfield role.
Respect
"This is not true," he said. "If I have said something to Arsene, it would never come out in the papers. I would go to him and speak to him face-to-face; we have great respect for each other. "Everyone knows I am not 100 per cent happy to be on the bench, that's normal - but I am being professional and doing my job. "I respect everybody in the squad, I respect him and I respect his decision. It's the only thing I can do."
