Alex McLeish admits he will make another attempt to persuade Arsene Wenger to let Johan Djourou stay at Birmingham City.
The defender is due to return to Arsenal in January, but McLeish hopes to keep the Switzerland international for the second half of the season.
The new Birmingham boss has already instigated contact with Wenger and will try again in the hope of receiving a positive answer.
"I'll ask Arsene again if he is going to allow Johan to stay," said McLeish. "I've still not heard from Arsene, but I will make contact again.
"It is time for me to ask because Djourou will be looking to get something sorted out as well."
McLeish also acknowledged that he can do little to dampen speculation that he is looking to sign Scottish players in the New Year.
The former Scotland coach has been linked with Rangers' Kris Boyd and Everton's James McFadden as he looks to improve his squad.
He added: "Will I be signing Scottish players? I wouldn't necessarily say that. I want to bring in players who are going to enhance the squad. It doesn't mean they will be Scottish players.
"There is a lot of speculation. I can't avoid that. I don't want to commit myself.
"We will try and make it club policy that we neither confirm or deny until a deal is done."
