Arsene Wenger insists he would 'prefer' Jens Lehmann to stay at the club, but says it is the player's decision.
And the Arsenal boss says he does not expect to boost his squad during the January transfer window.
Borussia Dortmund have suggested they may be about to make a move for the out-of-favour Lehmann and, with the goalkeeper having repeatedly expressed his frustration at being out of the first team, his departure looks increasingly likely.
However, Wenger insists the player could still have a future with Arsenal.
"We'll see together," he told Sky Sports News. "I believe first he has to make his mind up: does he want to stay with us or not?
"I personally would prefer him to stay and he has to make his mind up first and then we will see together."
African Cup of NationsArsenal will lose both Emmanuel Eboue and Kolo Toure on 7th January - the day after their FA Cup clash away at Burnley - when they join the Ivory Coast squad for the African Cup of Nations.
But, asked whether that will force them to enter the market, Wenger replied: "No, not really.
"We knew (about) that before the season started and we expected (Emmanuel) Adebayor to leave, so the good news is that Adebayor doesn't go.
"But we are not in the market at the moment."
Injury newsMeanwhile, Wenger has confirmed that there are no fresh injury concerns following the Portsmouth game.
William Gallas had to leave the pitch temporarily following a challenge from Niko Kranjcar, but has made a full recovery.
"Gallas is all right," he said. "We didn't lose anybody from the Portsmouth game."
However, Robin van Persie remains sidelined and Wenger does not know when he will be back in action.
"Van Persie is still injured. He will not be in contention for the Everton game."
