Bafetimbi Gomis has signed a contract extension at St Etienne to end speculation about his future.

Striker commits to Les Verts until 2012

Bafetimbi Gomis has signed a contract extension at St Etienne to end speculation about his future. The 22-year-old striker had been linked with a number of top clubs across Europe after an impressive season in Ligue 1. Newcastle and Arsenal were both understood to be interested, while the likes of Marseille and Paris Saint Germain were also connected. However, Gomis has signed a lucrative new four-year deal with St Etienne and he is delighted to be staying. "My priority has always been to stay at St Etienne, and it was important for me to sort out my personal situation before the start of Euro 2008," Gomis told the French press. "I hope to be able to play in the UEFA Champions League with Les Verts." Gomis, often described as the new Didier Drogba, earned his place in the France squad for Euro 2008 with two goals on his international debut against Ecuador last week.
