The captain lost his place to Laurent Koscielny in the wake of defeat at Tottenham in March and started just once in the final 10 games of the Premier League season.
Arsenal remained unbeaten in that time, a run of 26 points from a possible 30 earning the final Champions League qualification place at Spurs' expense.
And there has been speculation Vermaelen's four-year spell in north London could end this summer.
But the centre-half said: "I'm happy at Arsenal. I didn't play much and that was frustrating, but things can turn around quickly.
"I was on the bench, but I could just as quickly be playing again. I'm working hard to make that happen.
"These are things that happen in professional football. Arsenal are a great club where there is a lot of competition."
