Sky Sports pundit Ray Parlour says Arsene Wenger will need to spend in the summer if Arsenal are to challenge Chelsea for the title next season - and gives his take on where the Gunners should recruit.

Parlour says his former club can consider the campaign to have been successful if they finish second behind the champiuons but has called on the Frenchman to strengthen the spine of the team over the summer.

The Gunners are level on points with Manchester City in second place, with a game in hand, after beating Hull on Monday and runners-up spot would be the club's highest finish in a decade.

Arsenal need to keep their nucleus of players and also bring in some more quality in certain areas to really challenge Chelsea next season.

Speaking to the Morning View on Sky Sports News HQ, Parlour said: "Arsenal are playing some great stuff at the moment and there is great competition for places, especially in the midfield area.

"Competition is important for me and it was great to see Jack Wilshere coming on against Hull. It just shows you the strength in that area that they have players of his quality sitting on the bench.

"They have the FA Cup final to look forward to but second place would be a very good season. Then they have to look at how can we topple Chelsea, how can we get closer at this stage of the season to really give us a chance with three or four games left to win the league (next season).

'Challenge'

"Arsene Wenger definitely needs to buy players and during the summer is going to be very important and not just for Arsenal. Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool will all strengthen and the transfer market is going to be very competitive with players available.

"Who is going to go where will be the key next year. Arsenal need to keep their nucleus of players and also bring in some more quality in certain areas to really challenge Chelsea.

"The goalkeeping situation needs to be looked at - Wojciech Szczesny will move on and David Ospina has had his opportunity but you still need a real world-class goalkeeper.

"Obviously Petr Cech may be available in the summer and he's the sort of goalkeeper you have to be looking at. He's got that experience and that quality and is still a great age because keepers go on for a lot longer than outfield players.

"The centre-half position must be looked at as well; an old Tony Adams, if they could find someone like him, or a John Terry.

"And a central midfielder to strengthen right down the spine - someone like Morgan Schneiderlin... that's the sort of player I would be looking at if I was Arsene Wenger."
