Jamie Carragher does not think Ryan Giggs will be in the running for the Everton job, but understands why Sean Dyche would be considered as one of the favourites for the role.
Ronald Koeman was sacked as Everton manager on Monday, less than 24 hours after a 5-2 defeat to Arsenal on Super Sunday.
Former Manchester United winger Giggs has told Sky Sports he would be interested in the job, along with the vacant role at Leicester.
Although Carragher tweeted in jest "Give it Giggsy until the end of the season", he later told Sky Sports News: "I don't think Ryan Giggs would be in the running for the Everton job.
"No disrespect; he wants to get into management, and credit to him, he has had an apprenticeship at Manchester United under some great managers, but I don't think he would be in the running for Everton."
Burnley boss Dyche is currently the favourite with Sky Bet, and Carragher added: "He is doing a great job at Burnley. Everton are in the bottom three and need to tighten up defensively. Sean Dyche has those qualities.
"It would be a big step up for him but if you are a manager you want to move up eventually, no disrespect to Burnley but it's a huge step. That's natural for his progression as a manager. I can see totally why he's top of the list."
Everton spent heavily in the summer on players like Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Jordan Pickford, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney but sit 18th in the table having made their third-worst start to a Premier League campaign.
The loss at Goodison Park on Sunday was Everton's fifth consecutive match without a victory, but Carragher said he thought Koeman should have been given more time.
"I think Ronald Koeman's record over the last three years, including his time at Southampton, probably should have warranted him more time," he said.
"It doesn't help the players who have been brought in for a lot of money that the manager who brought them in has gone after nine league games. You have £150m of talent at the club and for the new manager they're not his players.
"I'm not surprised, that's the nature of the game we are in right now. The ownership at Everton have put a lot money into the club in the summer and that's the way of the game: owners want instant results and Ronald Koeman hasn't been able to provide that. I'm not surprised but I thought he should have been given more time."
U23s coach David Unsworth has been placed in temporary charge of Everton, who travel to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before facing Leicester in the Premier League on Super Sunday.
And Carragher says the club must decide whether to promote from within or go for another high-profile manager.
"That's the big decision for Everton. Do they go for a manager they want and they see as the future over the next three, four or five years and try to get that man now, or do they put someone like David Unsworth, Duncan Ferguson, John Ebbrell in charge and try to get through to a certain point when the manager they really want becomes available?
"That's the problem at this time of the season, who you can actually get as your manager. I expect them to try to make an appointment in the international break and get the man who they see taking Everton forward in the next two to three years."
