Paul Clement has revealed he was invited to join England's coaching staff during Sam Allardyce's brief reign as national manager.

However Bayern Munich, with whom Clement was assistant manager at the time, prevented the current Swansea boss from taking on the part-time role.

Clement meets up with Allardyce again on Monday, when the Welsh club travel to Merseyside to face a resurgent Everton. The Toffees appointed Allardyce as their new manager just under three weeks ago.

The 63-year-old Goodison Park boss wanted Clement, who was working as Carlo Ancelotti's assistant in Munich, to become part of the England set-up at St George's Park in the summer of 2016.

But Clement said: "We were so close to working with each other, but Bayern said 'no.' It was always only going to be a part-time role, I was not going to leave Bayern.

"I understood why Bayern said 'no'. They wanted me to concentrate solely on Bayern and rightly so with a club of that size. But I was disappointed because it would have been a great honour to work with the national team.

"So Sam appointed Craig Shakespeare and now they are working together at Everton."

And the 45-year-old said he was "disappointed" for Allardyce who left the national job after just 67 days - following a sting by a national newspaper.

He added: "I was disappointed for Sam. He made it clear throughout the years that England was a job that he really wanted.

"Then, to only have it for one game and for it to be pulled from underneath him - rightly or wrongly - was hard to see.

"But he is a manager who breeds confidence and that trickles down to the players.

"That's clearly helping Everton at the moment, as it has helped a lot of sides going through a really difficult time."
