The Scotland international had been left out of the side by manager Walter Smith, as punishment for failing to agree a new contract at the club. However, due to a striker shortage, Hutchison was played out-of-position in attack and he obliged with a splendid goal after 26 minutes.
Nick Barmby, watched by England coach Kevin Keegan, went on a fine run and crossed invitingly for Hutchison to net with a flying header.
Earlier, after only eight minutes, Leicester had scored first, courtesy of Irish defender Gerry Taggart. Muzzy Izzet`s corner allowed the burly centre back to power a header past Paul Gerrard.
It was a match that had little bearing on the top nor bottom of the table and, as a consequence, it fizzled out rather towards the end, as both sides settled for a point.
