Walter Smith is keen to hold on to the talented midfielder, who was one of the team's most consistent performers last season, and is ready to offer the 26-year-old up to £27,000 a week to ensure his signature.
Barmby still has one-year left on his current contract at Goodison Park, and Smith is all too aware of the fact that he risks losing the player on a free transfer next summer if he cannot agree a new deal.
Following an impressive domestic season, and his inclusion in Kevin Keegan's England Euro 2000 squad, Barmby had generated interest from a number of clubs including Chelsea, Liverpool and his former club Tottenham.
Barmby was thought to have been holding back on signing a new deal at the club until after the European Championships, knowing that an impressive display in Holland and Belgium would greatly improve his value.
