Reports at the weekend linked Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich with a move to the Principality, along with Metz's Faryd Mondragon and Chelsea's Christian Panucci, who is on loan from Internazionale.
Now, the club have been linked with a number of players, mainly currently playing in Italy but also in England, Germany and France as they look to strengthen the squad during the Championnat winter break.
Once again, Everton's Alex Nyarko (pictured) is being linked with a return to France just months after he moved to the Premiership from Nantes, despite the Ghanaian midfielder pledging to stay at Goodison Park after reports of Marseille's interest.
Internazionale midfield duo Clarence Seedorf and Benoit Cauet are also said to be targets for the reigning champions, who are currently 14th in the table after a disappointing first half to the season.
Seedorf has recently been linked with Lazio and Newcastle after falling out-of-favour at the San Siro and could be allowed to leave, although Cauet is less likely to want a transfer after establishing himself in the side.
Lens' Antoine Sibierski and Kaiserslautern's French international Youri Djorkaeff are also the subject of unlikely speculation as Monaco seek to add to their creative options.
Sibierski re-signed for Lens from Nantes in June and does not want to move, while Djorkaeff is settled in Germany and it is questionable whether he wants to return to his homeland after recent political clashes with the French Football Federation.
Yugoslavian international strike duo Pedrag Mijatovic and Darko Kovacevic are also reported to be targets for the Principality side.
Fiorentina forward Mijatovic, 31, has been linked with Aston Villa and Middlesbrough in recent months, and could relish the prospect of a move to France for a swansong in his career.
Kovacevic has been pushed out of the picture at Juventus this season following the arrival of David Trezeguet - ironically from Monaco - and, despite Borussia Dortmund being favourites for his signature, Marseille have already looked at taking him to France.
