The £1.5 million departure of midfielder Lee Carsley to Everton has sparked fears at Highfield Road that a number of high-profile players would be sold to slash the wage bill but McGinnity denied claims that record-signing Hughes would be one of those sacrificed.
"The prospect of Lee Hughes being sold has never ever been spoken about," said McGinnity.
"We'll have to cut back further - we can't have 53 players in the First Division. We can't afford them.
The sale of Carsley to Everton has proved unpopular amongst the Sky Blues faithful but McGinnity insists the player wanted to go.
"We sold Carsley because we had been approached by Everton and he wanted to go," added the City supremo.
