Toffees manager David Moyes will play Steve Simonsen in Wednesday's clash against Southampton, as Wright is ruled out of the tie and could now miss their forthcoming fixtures against Middlesbrough and Aston Villa.
The 24-year-old underwent a scan on his hand last week, however club officials gave the former Arsenal shot-stopper the all-clear when the results came back negative.
However, the Goodison Park outfit now fear the England keeper may be set for a short stint on the sidelines - in a bid to heal the injury and have the star back out on the park as soon as possible.
"It's been a big disappointment, especially for Richard," said Moyes to the club's official website.
"We were concerned that we may have missed something on one of the scans, because he has got a certain tender spot.
"We have had it X-rayed, we have had it re-scanned and unfortunately it is a lot worse than we first feared.
"He has been out and done some goalkeeping work and tried to get involved, but because of the pain and the way you handle the ball we can't take the chance."
