The 24-year-old Scottish international striker has been in impressive form for The Tangerines this season, having netted five times in just 12 league appearances.
Although United are keen to re-sign Thompson, the hit-man is free to talk to interested clubs from the 1st of January - should talks on a new contract fail.
Rangers will have to fend off stiff competition from Premiership outfits Everton and Tottenham if they want to lure The Tannadice star to Glasgow, as the duo are also keen on the Paisley-born ace.
Reports have hinted Thompson, who is set to miss the club's upcoming clash against Airdrie through injury, has met with chairman Eddie Thompson regarding a new contract, but as yet nothing has been finalised.
