The former Tranmere shot-stopper joins England international Richard Wright on the treatment table with the duo likely to be ruled out of Everton's weekend trip to Middlesbrough.
The pair's expected absence will force Toffees manager David Moyes into handing Nigel Martyn his full debut after the veteran keeper came on as a substitute for the injured Wright against Newcastle last Saturday.
But behind Martyn, Moyes is bereft of experienced cover for the former Leeds United man with Scottish rookie Iain Turner his only back-up.
Turner has featured on the substitutes' bench this term but Moyes is hopeful Simonsen's injury is not too serious.
"He's got a bit of a thigh strain he picked up in training striking the ball," Moyes told the club's website.
"We don't think it's too bad. It may possibly keep him out of the game for the weekend but hopefully it's not too bad."
