The Toffees shot stopper has been back in full training for the past couple of weeks and looked to have finally shaken off the problem which was causing discomfort when he struck the ball.
The former Arsenal man was on the bench for David Moyes's side for the Premiership ties with Southampton and Aston Villa and also completed a full run-out for the reserves last Wednesday.
The 25-year-old complained earlier this week of more pain in the knee and both he and the Goodison medical staff are at the end of their tether and want to get to the cause of the problem.
Wright only returned to training after having surgery on a different knee problem at the end of last season and Everton assistant Alan Irvine says all avenues will be explored before deciding whether the luckless keeper goes under the surgeon's knife again.
"We are looking at it with a view to surgery but we will have to wait and see," Irvine told the club's official website.
"He is still getting a reaction but hopefully it won't be anything - certainly nothing has been found so far and it should be a case of continuing the treatment.
"We're going to have another look at it and see how he's getting on. It doesn't seem to be settling down in the way we hoped it would."
