The young Scottish international has attracted interest from Leicester, Everton and Sunderland, with a £400,000 fee being mooted.
Despite denying interest from The Black Cats, Butcher admits he may be short-changed in any future transfer dealings:
"We've not had contact from Mick McCarthy or anybody else about the player. As far as I'm concerned it's just paper talk."
Motherwell recently received a £1.25 million fee for exciting talent James McFadden, but Butcher concedes that the current market does not favour a selling club, especially considering Pearson is approaching the end of his contract.
Butcher said: "Unfortunately, the players are worth what the clubs are prepared to pay.
"Pearson and Steven Hammell have another month of their contracts remaining, and we just have to see what happens.
"There's not a lot of movement in the market, but having said that, there's always a market for quality."
Losing either player will be a major blow for Motherwell, especially considering the strides made by the club this season.
Chasing a European place, Motherwell are currently fourth-placed in The SPL and enjoying an eight-match unbeaten run.
