Espanyol want Everton target

By Patrick Haond
Spanish strugglers Espanyol are ready to rival Everton in the battle to secure the services of Strasbourg midfielder Christian Bassila.

Everton have confirmed they are contemplating a move for the 26-year-old when the transfer window reopens in the New Year but could face competition from Espanyol.

The Catalan club, who are propping up La Liga, are understood to be keen to land Bassila on loan until the end of the season.

But that plan is unlikely to meet with approval from either Bassila or Strasbourg, with the Frenchman not interested in a short-term switch.

"I don't know anything," commented Bassila. "For the moment, my desire is clear.

"I have ambition and I want to be involved in a long-term project."

Strasbourg also refuted any notion of offloading Bassila on a temporary basis, particularly for the fee which is being mooted.

The club's general manager Marc Keller stated: "There is nothing. Moreover, loaning Bassila for ‚é¼300,000 would be ridiculous."
