With Crewe still not assured of First Division safety, Gradi has moved to bolster his squad with the arrival of the promising Toffees striker.
The 20-year-old is a product of Everton's youth set-up but is yet to break into manager David Moyes' first-team plans.
Symes is highly rated at Goodison Park, having been a prolific partner to England sensation Wayne Rooney in various youth teams.
Gradi is hopeful that the robust 6ft 3in forward will provide healthy competition to Crewe's current front two, Dean Ashton and Steve Jones.
Symes has initially signed for one month and goes straight into Crewe's squad to face Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
The Crewe boss also admitted that he missed out on a deal for Mansfield striker Andy White.
Gradi had hoped to take the 22-year-old on loan with a view to a permanent deal but was thwarted in his attempts by Mansfield chairman Keith Haslam.
''We tried to get Andy White but the Mansfield chairman wouldn't let him come,'' Gradi told the club's official website.
