Beattie in fitness race

Everton striker James Beattie is in a race to be fit for Saturday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton boss David Moyes says striker James Beattie is in a race to be fit for the club's trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Southampton hit-man suffered a calf injury earlier in the month and was unable to appear for the reserves on Tuesday with the problem.

Moyes admits that unless the 27-year-old is able to train before Saturday's clash in North London, Beattie is likely to miss out against Spurs.

"James is still working with the physio and there is no way I can consider him for Saturday unless he has some training under his belt," Moyes told the club's official website.

"He is a naturally fit lad, but he needs some match practice and without training, the best we could hope for is a place on the subs' bench again at the weekend."
