Everton have revealed Andy Johnson was fit enough to play for England against Spain.
Everton have revealed Andy Johnson was fit enough to play for England against Spain in midweek.
The striker was withdrawn from the squad on Monday due to an ankle injury, depleting Steve McClaren's attacking options in the process.
But Everton assistant manager Alan Irvine admits Johnson would have been able to figure in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
According to Irvine, the pacey forward was merely not in a position to train in the build-up to the match, but was fit for the game itself.
"Andy didn't pull out of the squad, he wanted to play," said Irvine.
"He went along and told them that he was sore and couldn't train for a couple of days, but that he would be ready for the match against Spain.
"But they told him that if he couldn't train then maybe it would be better if he went back to his club for treatment.
"Obviously, we were really happy here about that, and not because we're Scotsmen!
"But maybe England could have used him."
