Plymouth forward to sign on

Plymouth starlet Ashley Barnes is set to shun a move to the Premier League and sign a new contract with the club, skysports.com understands. The 19-year-old forward was signed by The Pilgrims from non-league Paulton Rovers in 2007. He began this season on loan at Eastbourne Borough, but he returned to the club in January and he has now forced his way into the first team. With a string of impressive performances under his belt, a host of top-flight clubs are now showing an interest including Everton, Wigan and newly-promoted Birmingham City. Plymouth have been desperately trying to get Barnes signed up to a longer deal and he is now set to put pen-to-paper for the South Coast club. Barnes will now sign a two-and-half-year deal after he helped Plymouth stay in the Championship. Barnes is a also a youth international with Austria - who he qualifies for through his grandmother. He was spotted by the Austrian FA during a pre-season tour last year.
