Tony Hibbert has credited his excellent displays for Everton to Phil Neville because he knows they have to be to keep the captain out of the team.
Toffees boss David Moyes has shown his ruthless streak by dropping his skipper in favour of the resurgent form of the former academy graduate.
Hibbert's wholehearted displays gave him a special affinity with the Everton fans, who recognised his contribution to the team last month by naming him player of September.
The Toffees travel to Fulham on Sunday and, despite flourishing in the team at the moment, with a former England international lying in wait, Hibbert knows he has to remain at the peak of his game.
"It's good to have strong competition, you need that," he told the club's official website.
"Ideally you want that in every position and it's good for the team to have a good number of people who can play in a position and we have got that at the moment in certain areas.
"I think I have done alright," continued the academy product, who has started the last five league games.
"I've been enjoying it but I would like for us to get a few more points.
"I don't think it's about me and how I'm doing. I like it if we are winning, no matter how we are playing, as long as we get the three points.
"I would rather have the three points than have a worldy of a game."
