The midfielder has been named in a provisional 35-man England squad for the Under-20 World Cup and does not mind keeping busy while most of his team-mates will be on their summer break.
Having been named the club's Young Player of the Season for 2012/13, he is confident he can continue to progress and become a regular in the side.
Everton are looking for new boss after David Moyes was appointed by Manchester United, and Barkley is looking forward to competing for a place.
"Things like the award give me real hope of becoming a first-team regular and I'm thinking about next season already," he told evertontv.
"I've got the Under-20 World Cup coming up, so I haven't really got a summer but I'll be ready for the pre-season, for the new manager and hopefully I'll impress him."
Barkley added: "Playing against different countries from all over the world will be good for me. It should be a good experience."
