Leandro Bacuna fired Paul Lambert's visitors into the lead with their only shot on target and the Toffees needed a Steven Naismith equaliser and Kevin Mirallas' superb free-kick to snatch the points in the second period.
Distin said afterwards: "We were a bit cautious in the first half - maybe the Liverpool game was still in our minds. But second half we opened up a bit, began to play our game and everything went well.
"We had most of the ball in the first half and they hadn't been really dangerous so it was frustrating to concede the goal but it's part of football so you need to accept it and react.
"We had a little word in the dressing room at half-time - we knew it wasn't good enough. We came back with better intensity in the second half and you could see that."
On the set-piece winner from Mirallas, Distin added: "In training he's really rubbish! I might start to take free-kicks as well because if he can do it, I can do it!
"But we're not a one-man team - we've got five or six players who can score goals and that's great."
