Everton ended their pre-season without a victory after they suffered another defeat, this time 3-1 at Bundesliga outfit Paderborn.
Roberto Martinez named a strong side, although Belgians Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas were not involved.
Martinez would have expected more from his team as they were soundly beaten at the Benteler Arena - although things started brightly with young striker Chris Long putting the Toffees ahead with a stunning strike on 13 minutes.
The German side, though, were level just two-minutes later when Moritz Stoppelkamp fired home from the penalty spot after Tim Howard was adjudged to have brought down Stefan Kutsche.
Ross Barkley was introduced at the break to join new signing Muhamed Besic in midfield but it was Paderborn who finished strongly with two goals in the final 22-minutes to take victory.
They went ahead on 68-minutes with subsitute Marvin Duksch heading home before full-back Daniel Bruckner fired home the third.
The defeat means Everton lost four of their five pre-season friendlies, but they will be looking for a better result when they kick-off their Premier League campaign against Leicester City next week.
