Samuel was born in the city of San Fernando in the south-west of Trinidad but moved to England as a youngster and represented London Schoolboys teams.
He played youth football for Charlton and joined Villa in August 1998, made his senior debut the following year and went on to make 199 appearances over nine years.
He moved to Bolton in 2007, playing 83 games over four years before a brief loan spell at Cardiff. He also played for England at U18, U20 and U21 levels and was called up for the senior squad by Sven-Goran Eriksson.
He went on to play for Trinidad and Tobago's senior team. Samuel had most recently been manager of Cheshire non-league side Egerton.
The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association released a statement on their Facebook page.
It read: "We've received some terrible news that Jlloyd Samuel died in a car crash this morning in England.

Absolutely gutted to hear the news of the passing of Jlloyd Samuel. Took me under his wing when I joined Villa and helped me settle. Such a good guy on and off the pitch and a truly good friend. Condolences to Emma, his kids and the Samuel family. RIP J 🙏🏾❤— Ashley Young (@youngy18) May 15, 2018
