Former Aston Villa and Bolton defender Jlloyd Samuel has died in a car accident at the age of 37.
Aston Villa tweeted: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former player Jlloyd Samuel at the age of just 37 in a car accident.
"Our players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect tonight and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this very difficult time."
Samuel was born in the city of San Fernando in the south-west of Trinidad but moved to England as a youngster and represented London Schoolboys teams.
He played youth football for Charlton and joined Villa in August 1998, made his senior debut the following year and went on to make 199 appearances over nine years.
He moved to Bolton in 2007, playing 83 games over four years before a brief loan spell at Cardiff. He also played for England at U18, U20 and U21 levels and was called up for the senior squad by Sven-Goran Eriksson.
He went on to play for Trinidad and Tobago's senior team. Samuel had most recently been manager of Cheshire non-league side Egerton.
The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association released a statement on their Facebook page.
It read: "We've received some terrible news that Jlloyd Samuel died in a car crash this morning in England.
"The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and his former national team-mates at this time extends deepest condolences to his family members both in the UK and here in Trinidad and Tobago."
Cheshire Police said they were called to a serious collision involving a van and a Range Rover in High Legh, Cheshire at 7.55am on Tuesday.
Their statement added: "Sadly the driver of the car, Jlloyd Samuel, 37, from Lymm, died at the scene. The driver of the van, a 54-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment."
