Allardyce wants to provide competiton for Jussi Jaaskelainen and Steve Banks at The Reebok Stadium.
38-year-old Kevin Poole has been drafted in on a tempoary basis, but Frenchman Dutruel could very well provide Allardyce with the cover he wants.
"I'll always be searching for a goalkeeper to come in and compete with the other keepers we've got," said Allardyce.
"He won't be third choice as I've never liked the tag of 'number three goalkeeper'.
"In Jussi, I've got that top-level goalie. No disrespect to Steve Banks, who is a good keeper in his own right, but the form Jussi has shown last year and this year has put him in the top bracket in The Premiership," he told the official Bolton website.
"If I found somebody better than Jussi, then great, but I don't think I ever will!"
Dutruel's agent, Phillipe Flavier, told planetfootball.com that his client is still thinking over whether to move to Bolton, after the two clubs agreed a loan package with a view to a permanent deal.
"He is still thinking, he has not made his decision yet," said Flavier.
"We will have some news soon."
