Allardyce had hoped to secure the services of the German international on loan from Borussia Dortmund until the end of the season.
However, after the player's agent revealed that he does not relish the prospect of joining The Trotters, Allardyce admits that the deal could be dead and buried.
"What seemed to be a 'yes' is turning into a 'maybe'. I will be extremely disappointed if the answer is no," said Allardyce.
"But for Christmas the deal might have been done by now."
Allardyce can console himself with the fact that he is to add to his list of goalkeepers by signing Finnish shot-stopper Jani Viander, who is currently on trial with the club.
"I would look to sign him after his trial period if things go to schedule," said Allardyce.
Allardyce already has a surplus of goalkeepers at the club, with veteran Kevin Poole as back-up to Jussi Jaaskelainen, along with new arrival Jeremy Bon, but he is also chasing Juventus goalkeeper Fabio Carini.
Meanwhile, one man heading out of Lancashire is Japanese striker Akinori Nishizawa, who has failed to make it into the first team during his loan spell.
His deal with Bolton expires at the end of May but it seems certain that he will return to his club Cerezo Osaka without figuring in the first team.
