The defender has been on extended loan at Boundary Park, after originally joining the Second Division club back in October.
As the 22-year-old full back feels surplus to requirements at The Reebok Stadium, a switch to Oldham was clinched after a deal was accepted by Sam Allardyce.
Holden still had a year left on his contract with the Premiership side, but accepted the step down in order to obtain regular first team football. He will be joined at the club by another new signing in the shape of Chesham United's Keith Andrews.
Although a fee was initially reported to have been agreed between the two clubs, it is in essence a free transfer, with Bolton's only hope of capturing cash being a sell-on clause inserted into his three-year contract.
Meanwhile, the latest player to be linked with a move to Bolton is Torino's out-of-contract midfielder Antonio Asta.
The 31-year-old has interested a number of English teams, including Blackburn Rovers, but had looked set to stay in Turin.
However, Serie A sources claim Allardyce's men are the new favourites in the chase for the experienced Toro skipper.
Veteran Trotters keeper Kevin Poole has signed a new one-year contract with the club.
