The former Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday ace proved his return to fitness playing in the reserves' 2-2 draw with Newcastle on Monday night.
The 33-year-old has been out of action for two months with a long-standing groin problem which has meant he has only played two games this season.
The versatile performer's return will be a major boost for Trotters boss Sam Allardyce as he looks to lift the side out of trouble at the wrong end of the table
Meanwhile, Trotters striker Chris Armstrong has suffered a blow in his bid to break into the first-team.
The former Tottenham ace is on a short-term deal at The Reebok Stadium and is hoping to get a chance to play to prove he is worthy of a long-term contract.
Armstrong is expected to be out of action for two weeks after sustaining a groin strain.
