It was a match Trotters boss Sam Allardyce was desperate to win, and perhaps there was some anxiety in his team's play, although Delroy Facey did have one early chance that he squandered.
Jay-Jay Okocha was behind most of Bolton's best work, and his 30-yard free kick stung the hands of Maik Taylor, and Henrik Pedersen lobbed over, but the best chances were being carved out by the visitors.
Facundo Sava had a goal disallowed, Louis Saha looked lively, and Steed Malbranque missed the clearest opening of the game on 56 minutes when stabbing wastefully wide after great play by Steve Finnan.
Malbranque was also off target when meeting a deep Sean Davis cross at the far post, and it seemed then that neither side would break the deadlock.
Pedersen did have another effort tipped over by Taylor, and Sylvain Legwinski made a goal-saving clearance, as Bolton worked hard to try and grab the elusive winner.
