Bolton took the lead after just three minutes when they were awarded a penalty.
Lucas Neill was adjudged to have tugged the shirt of Jay-Jay Okocha and Youri Djorkaeff dispatched the penalty.
The majority of the club record 27,423 crowd were then in raptures when Wanderers doubled their lead after 20 minutes.
Kevin Davies grabbed his first goal for the club, against one of his former employers, when he finished clinically from the edge of the area after Djorkaeff's through ball.
Blackburn had chances before they finally pulled themselves back into the game after 50 minutes when Matt Jansen scored.
Both sides could have added further goals, with Blackburn have the better of the chances - particularly Dwight Yorke.
Rovers' chances of getting anything from the game appeared to vanish with three minutes remaining when new signing Steven Reid, who came on just ten minutes earlier, was sent off on his debut for a lunge on Greek international Stelios Giannakopoulos.
Undeterred Rovers pushed forward and Yorke grabbed a last-gasp leveller when Ciccio Grabbi's cross found the former Manchester United star in space at the back post and he headed home from close range.
