The Silkmen had lined up a month-long loan deal with Bolton for the 23-year-old midfielder, but he was shown a red card playing for the Trotters' reserves against Newcastle United.
Johnson was set to sign for Macclesfield after a wrangle over his work permit had been ironed out, but he will now remain at The Reebok Stadium until after his ban has run its course.
Silkmen boss David Moss has confirmed that they may resurrect their interest in Johnson when his ban ends.
"It's pointless bringing him on loan now that he has received this red card," said Moss. "He will be missing for four games, which is half of his loan spell with us.
"I will go back and have another look when he is clear from this suspension because I would still like to bring him to the club on loan."
