Ba joined The Trotters on a short-term deal in September and was gradually inching nearer towards a first start in The Premiership.
But the 29-year-old's contract expired at the end of December and terms have yet to be agreed to keep the former Milan man at the club until the campaign's conclusion.
The delay has ruled Ba out of Saturday's FA Cup trip to Tranmere and Trotters boss Sam Allardyce is becoming concerned about the situation dragging on.
Middlesbrough have been linked with a move for Ba in the French media with Allardyce acknowledging he is fearful another club have made an offer for the ex-international.
"We have a slight problem with Ibrahim Ba because we haven't sorted his new contract out," said Allardyce.
"It comes down to money and it means he won't be able to play against Tranmere.
"Maybe another club has popped out of the blue to compete with us. But I would be disappointed if he decided to leave here."
On a brighter note, Allardyce revealed his bid to sign Atletico Madrid striker Javi Moreno on loan is edging towards a positive climax.
He added: "I am reasonably satisfied with the way things are going.
"We have moved a stage closer and hopefully we can complete a deal.
"I know we have got to improve the squad in terms of numbers. If we get Moreno in, then we can move on to the next target."
