Hornets lament Heidar setback

Aidy Boothroyd has expressed his frustration at missing out on Heidar Helguson.

Adrian Boothroyd has expressed his frustration at missing out on a deal to bring Heidar Helguson back to Watford.

The Icelandic striker has agreed a three-year contract to join Bolton Wanderers from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

Helguson was wanted back at his former club, having scored 64 goals in 199 appearances during his first spell at Vicarage Road.

Hornets boss Boothroyd was disappointed to lose out to Bolton, but is trying to take a positive from the transfer setback.

"I'm very disappointed because we chased him for a long time," Boothroyd told the club's official website.

"I had tried to keep it to myself and we finally got in a position where we could speak to him, but he decided he didn't want to come as he had already signed for Bolton.

"He was a legend here, but I don't think the fact that he's already been here before would have influenced his decision because knowing him, wherever he goes he would always give it 100 per cent.

"But sometimes things aren't meant to be. It's not the first time I've missed out on a player and it won't be the last.

"We tried to get Sam Parkin and missed out, and then we went on to get promoted, so let's hope that's a bit of an omen."
