Bolton boss Gary Megson was delighted with the result after watching his team beat relegation rivals Wigan 4-1 to pull clear of the drop-zone.
Goals from captain Kevin Nolan, Kevin Davies and Nicolas Anelka, plus a Paul Scharner own goal, sealed the points for the Trotters, while Anelka was also guilty of a horrendous penalty miss.
Bolton have now moved to 14th in the league after this crucial victory and while Megson said his team's performance was in and out, he believed his side got better as the game went on.
"In terms of performance we can do better. In terms of result, that's a great result for us," he said.
While admitting Wigan caused his team a few problems, he said Bolton themselves missed a penalty and had numerous other opportunities which they did not capitalise on.
"I wouldn't like to give the impression that I think we've got away with it - thrashing maybe not but certainly (it) is a perfectly just result," said Megson.
Bolton had to weather a Wigan storm after the break before they got the crucial third goal.
The Bolton boss added: "I thought that at times we looked a little bit desperate but our desperate defending did keep them out and when they did get past our back lads, Jussi's made one or two really good saves from corners."
Megson made nine changes from the European victory on Thursday but denied resting his big names.
"We don't have big or small players - they are all players. It wasn't a case of rest; we are in this European competition - it gives us one or two problems because it's played on a Thursday. Given our league position, we have to do some things that maybe look a little bit strange to the outside world. It is not a case of rest - it is trying to get the right team on the pitch for the right time," he said.
When asked how vital it was to beat teams around them in the league, he added: "It is vital for everybody - we knew the fixtures and results from yesterday and everybody has hard games.
"There are a few teams in this division where you know if you get anything then it's going to be a big bonus but there are other teams that you need to make sure that you are picking up results against and invariably that is the teams that are in and around your own league position.
"Today we have got a good result."
