Southend United have signed Bolton Wanderers defender Cian Bolger on a 28-day emergency loan.

The 21-year-old will stay at Roots Hall until the back end of March and goes straight into the squad to play York at Bootham Crescent on Saturday. Boss Phil Brown told the club's official website: "We've been tracking the lad for a few weeks now and the reports from Bob Shaw on him have been very impressive. "He's not played first-team football with Bolton, but I saw him against Spurs' Under-21's and it was a very dominant defensive performance against a strong Spurs side. "He's a big voice on the pitch and has all the attributes of strong defender. We've been missing that since Luke Prosser's injury. "I'm delighted we have been able to bring him in. It will help freshen things up and I'm sure he can play an important role."
