Jim McIntyre (pictured) was the hero of the hour with a 69th minute strike as he took advantage of James Harper's brilliant run to fire home the only goal of the contest from close range.
The game was a dour affair with both teams looking to avoid making the mistake that would cost them the match and as such the quality of the contest was adversely affected.
The first-half was edged by the visitors with Reading looking tired from their mid-week exploits and a lack of width costing both teams.
However, Royals boss Alan Pardew's decision to replace top-scorer Jamie Cureton with combative Tony Rougier paid dividends for the home side.
Yet it was Harper, Reading's young star who was the main difference and it was his run and superb low cross that set up McIntyre's winner.
Wigan had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down and also had a 'goal' ruled out for offside as the second-half turned out to be more exciting.
