Danny Wilson's side go two points clear at the top of the league thanks to a Scott Murray (Pictured) strike and Tony Thorpe's fourth goal of the season, despite a late reply from Wigan's Lee Ashcroft.
Brentford move into second place as the only other side from the early pace-setters to grab three more points, with The Bees sealing their win very early on with a first-minute goal from Paul Evans.
Wrexham staged a brave comeback to stall Colchester's early run after Kevin Rapley had put the U's ahead with his third goal of the season after 17 minutes. Martyn Chalk and Darren Ferguson where both given their marching orders before Carlos Edwards gave the home side an unlikely point.
Bournemouth came from 2-0 to clame their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw against Cardiff at Ninian Park.
Leo Fortune-West and Robert Earnshaw put Alan Cork's side in the lead but a Warren Feeney penalty and Jason Tindall striker gave The Cherries a share of the points against Cardiff, who had Willie Boland sent off late on.
Port Vale sent out a message to the rest of the league with a thumping 4-1 win over Peterborough at Vale Park.
Phil Hardy grabbed the opener on his Vale debut before former Michael Cummins made it 2-0 after 50 minutes. Former Sheffield United star Jon Cullen pulled one back for Posh before Stephen Brooker and Stephen McPhee sealed the game for Brian Horton's men.
On a day of comebacks, Wycombe drew 2-2 with Blackpool, despite Brett Ormerod and Phil Thompson putting The Seasiders 2-0 up within 17 minutes. Steve Brown pulled one back and Darren Currie grabbed a point for Lawrie Sanchez with his goal eight minutes from time.
Stoke won 2-0 at Cambridge with goals from Peter Thorne and Andrew Cooke in a game that ended ten-a-side with Stoke's Siarhei Shtaniuk and Cambridge's Des Byrne shown the red card.
John Sheridan and Stuart Balmer gave Oldham and 2-0 win over Swindon and leave Roy Evans and Neil Ruddock still searching for a win.
Notts County beat Northampton at Sixfields with goals from Ian Barraclough and Mark Stallard, while a Danny Schofield brace also gave Huddersfield a 2-0 win over Bury at the McApline Stadium.
Dave Watson bagged his first point as Tranmere manager with a goalless draw at home to Brighton and QPR and Reading also drew 0-0 at Loftus Road.
