The Royals have failed to extend the loan spell of Fulham's Marcus Hahnemann, which leaves manager Alan Pardew with only one goalkeeper in youngster Jamie Ashdown, as number one Phil Whitehead is sidelined with a groin injury.
Promotion-chasing Reading are now looking at their options and Ilic could very well be lured to the Madjeski Stadium on a temporary basis.
Meanwhile, young striker Nathan Tyson has signed a new two-year contract.
"Nathan is an exciting talent," said Royals boss Pardew.
"He's been out on loan at Swansea where he did very well, he hasn't had his chance in the first team here yet but we think there's a bit more to come from him.
"He's a bit behind our other youngsters, but not far behind and we think he's another who can come through into the first team."
