The 20-year-old has only started twice for The Royals, but has played an important role coming from the bench making 32 additional appearances, scoring seven goals in the league.
Manager Alan Pardew had hoped the youngster could play out the rest of the campaign, but the medical staff feel that with the club almost assured of promotion that it is not worth the risk.
"It's the same problem he has had for the last few months," explained club physio Jon Fearn to readingfc.co.uk.
"We have managed it for a while, the manager and the player were happy to continue but we've had to tailor his training and it's got to the point that we've decided he needs some rest to get it better.
"He won't need an operation, he just hasn't felt as fast and sharp as he did at the start of the season, and he felt he probably wasn't doing himself justice."
