The Royals won promotion last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Brentford and manager Alan Pardew has wasted little time in assessing his squad.
Matthew Robinson, Neil Smith, Keith Jones and young keeper Simon Cox have all be told they can leave the Madejski Stadium when their contracts expire in the summer.
Midfielder Smith arrived in 1999 from Fulham for £100,000 and made a total of 77 appearances.
Robinson was signed from Portsmouth for £150,000 in January 2000, but after losing his place to Nicky Shorey he has been told he is surplus to requirements.
Veteran Jones moved joined in 2000 from Charlton and played 45 times for Reading.
Eire Under-18 keeper Cox is now looking for a new club in his native Ireland.
Meanwhile, one player who looks set to stay is winger Sammy Igoe (pictured) - Pardew will hold talks with the former Portsmouth man this week.
