Shorey linked up with The Royals in a £25,000 switch from Leyton Orient two years ago and has impressed under the tutelage of Alan Pardew.
The 21-year-old left back is highly-rated by the Reading boss and talks have opened on improving his deal at the Madejski Stadium.
His current contract expires in the summer of 2005 but The Royals are eager to reward Shorey for his progress over the past two seasons.
He has been a virtual ever-present this term and Royals chief executive Nigel Howe confirmed contract discussions are ongoing.
Howe said: "His current terms are lower than most other players even though he's a regular in the first team.
"We're looking at Nicky's situation while we deal with the rest of the squad.
"We're having discussions with a lot of people but we aren't ready to announce anything yet. It's moving forward nicely but nobody is ready to sign just yet."
