Dickov scored with 11 minutes to go, his 20th goal of the season, Trevor Benjamin added a second on 83 minutes before Gerry Taggart put through his own net on the stroke of full-time as they reduced Portsmouth's lead to two points.
Goals from Dean Windass and Michael Brown's 18th goal of the season were enough to take The Blades into third place as they beat Brighton 2-1 at Bramall Lane.
Windass opened proceedings on five minutes before Richard Carpenter equalised ten minutes later and Brown scored a wonderful low free-kick that gave Dave Beasant no chance as The Seagulls drop back into the relegation zone.
Ipswich Town kept alive their play-off hopes as they overcame Reading 3-1 at Portman Road.
In a fairly bad tempered affair Thomas Gaardsoe gave Joe Royle's men the lead with just a minute on the clock before Nick Forster slotted home his 13th strike of the season.
Captain Matt Holland and Jim Magilton made it 40 home goals scored this season before Gaardsoe was involved in an incident that saw Royals' star Adrian Viveash sent-off for shoving the goal scorer in the face 15 minutes into the second half.
Norwich City managed to win only their second away victory of the season thanks to a 2-0 win at Millwall.
Scottish star Malky Mackay scored after eight minutes before Zema Abbey made sure of the points seven minutes before half-time.
Gillingham secured an away win at Watford thanks to a goal from Paul Shaw on 65 minutes.
The win was made all the more special as the game marked player/manager Andy Hessenthaler's 500th league appearance.
Preston continued their good form of late as they went goal crazy at Deepdale.
Goals from Graham Alexander, Dickson Etuhu, Richard Cresswell and a double from South African striker George Koumantarakis made it a 5-0 hammering dished out to Colin Lee's men.
Sheffield Wednesday managed to grab a point against Yorkshire rivals Bradford City.
Andy Gray scored his 13th goal of the season from the penalty spot after half an hour before Tony Crane managed to equalise with eight minutes to go.
John Oster scored with Grimsby Town's only attack of their game against Rotherham United to move them above Stoke City and Brighton and out of the relegation places as The Potteries side were held 0-0 by Wolves at Molineaux.
Wimbledon also kept their late-run for a play-off place challenge alive as they beat landlords Crystal Palace.
Norwegian star Trond Andersen scored on the stroke of half time as The Dons make a late run to get themselves into the play-off picture.
