The 27-year-old may be added to the United squad, should he prove his worth at the struggling Eastern Conference club, in order to supplement DC's misfiring front line.
"Obviously his strike-rate per game at a very high level impresses us," said United manager Ray Hudson to The Washington Times.
"He's a very elusive type of forward and he's scored goals from being an England youth player all the way up his career."
Cureton is set to leave Reading on a free transfer after turning down a new one-year deal with The Royals.
He will arrive in the US capital in time to watch United in action against Columbus at RFK Stadium.
