The Dons are still seeking their first win at their new Milton Keynes home and things looked good when Adam Nowland gave them the lead shortly after the break with a fine free kick.
However, Neil Warnock's Blades hit back and goals on 62 and 68 minutes by Ashley Ward and Paul Peschisolido respectively gave the South Yorkshire side all the points.
It was a see-saw affair at The Stadium of Light as Sunderland fought back from a goal down to beat Ipswich Town 3-2.
Darren Bent's defected effort gave Town the lead, but goals either side of the break by Gary Breen and John Oster put The Black Cats in control.
Joe Royle's Ipswich fought back bravely and Richard Naylor hauled them level with a header on 51 minutes.
Kevin Kyle has hit a rich vein of form and he netted Sunderland's winner with a goal on 85 minutes.
West Bromwich Albion kept themselves within a point of The Blades, thanks to a 2-1 win over Millwall.
Jason Koumas's well-taken effort on five minutes gave The Baggies the advantage and Scott Dobie doubled the lead soon after.
Stuart Nethercott reduced the arrears on the stroke of half-time, but West Brom held firm to secure a gritty three points.
Paul McVeigh scored a deflected late winner for Norwich City in their game with Reading. The Canaries took the lead through in-form Darren Huckerby on 17 minutes, but The Royals hit back through Nicky Forster.
However, McVeigh had the final say with a finish three minutes from time.
Martin Butler scored twice and Darren Byfield netted the other as Rotherham United had a comfortable win over Stoke City.
Wigan Athletic remain on the coat-tails of the leaders after grinding out a 0-0 draw at Cardiff City, while Burnley and Watford played out a 1-1 draw. Luke Chadwick netted The Clarets' leveller after Scott Fitzgerald had given The Hornets the lead.
Watford will be happy with a point, having played for over 25 minutes with ten men following the dismissal of Paolo Vernazza.
Lee Morris netted twice to give Derby County a much needed win at Bradford City, who briefly had hope when Andy Gray hauled them level.
